Why holiday homes need more than a quick clean

A holiday home that has stood quiet since winter collects dust, cobwebs and — on the coast — a layer of salt on every window. Guests notice glass first, because the view is usually why they booked.

Start with the windows and sliding doors

• Clean inside and outside glass, especially sea-facing windows and balcony doors.
• Wipe frames and sills so salt doesn't run back onto the glass.
• Clear sliding-door tracks of beach sand. Gritty tracks are the most common guest complaint about sliders.
• Wipe glass balustrades on balconies and around pools.

Then a top-to-bottom deep clean

• Kitchen: inside cupboards, oven, fridge and the cutlery drawer.
• Bathrooms: descale showers and taps, which matters if the water has stood unused.
• Bedrooms: dust, vacuum mattresses, fresh linen, clear cupboards and hangers.
• Outdoor: patio furniture, braai area and outdoor shower.

Plan changeovers before the season starts

If you have back-to-back guests in December and January, agree changeover days and a cleaning checklist in advance. A regular clean between stays keeps bathrooms, kitchen and linen guest-ready. Add an outside window clean mid-season if the home faces the sea.

Sort out access early

If you're not local, arrange keys, gate remotes or estate access codes before the season. Let your estate or body corporate know contractors will be coming. Then send us photos on WhatsApp so we can quote without a site visit.
