How to deal with salt build-up on windows near the sea
Why sea-facing windows in Strand and Gordon's Bay go cloudy, how to clean salt off safely, what not to use, and how often coastal windows need professional cleaning.
Quick answer
Salt from sea spray dries on glass as a cloudy film. Rinse with plenty of clean water first to dissolve the salt, then wash with mild soapy water and squeegee dry. Never scrub dry salt or use abrasive pads — salt crystals can scratch glass. Sea-facing homes usually need cleaning every four to eight weeks.
Why coastal windows go cloudy
Wind off False Bay carries fine salt spray inland. When it dries, a thin crystalline film is left on the glass. Light scatters through it, so the window looks hazy — especially in the afternoon sun. Salt also attracts moisture, so dust sticks to it and the film thickens.
How to clean salt off safely
- Rinse first. Wet the glass well with clean water to dissolve the salt before you touch it.
- Wash gently. Use a soft applicator or microfibre cloth with mild dishwashing liquid in warm water.
- Squeegee dry. Work from top to bottom and wipe the blade after each stroke.
- Detail the edges. Dry the corners and edges with a lint-free cloth.
- Wipe frames and sills last. Salt collects there too.
What not to do
- Don't scrub dry glass. Salt and sand crystals act like sandpaper.
- Don't use scouring pads, steel wool or abrasive powders.
- Don't clean in direct midday sun. Water dries too fast and leaves streaks.
- Don't mix cleaning chemicals.
- Don't climb onto ledges or balconies to reach outside glass. Leave height work to people with the right equipment.
When to call a professional
If the glass is still hazy after a careful clean, if there are hard white or orange mineral spots, or if the windows are out of safe reach, it's time for a professional clean. We'll tell you up front if any old staining won't fully lift. Window cleaning in Strand is one of our most-booked services.

Questions
Can salt damage window glass?
Salt itself rarely damages glass, but scrubbing it off dry can scratch it, and long-standing mineral deposits can etch the surface. Regular, gentle cleaning prevents both.
Does rain clean salt off windows?
Not really. Rain dissolves some salt, but it also washes salt and dirt down from the frames and leaves drip marks as it dries.
